Are Genital Warts Contagious?

If you have a partner you are sexually active with, there is a strong possibility they have already contracted the HPV virus from you. However only 50% of people who have HPV develop genital warts.

If you have contracted HPV you may not have any visible symptoms yet, as symptoms tend to occur a few months after contraction. Sometimes several years pass without any symptoms. However even without showing any symptoms it still leaves a healthy partner vulnerable to becoming infected during sexual activity.

Genital Warts are extremely contagious and sadly there is no cure for HPV, and once you are infected you will have it for the rest of your life. However your body can ‘fight it off’ and the virus itself can become dormant for decades and then reappear, but once the warts have formed they don’t typically regress and require treatment. Although some genital warts can disappear after 2-3 years.

There are many different types of warts. The most common warts are the rough looking lesions most often found on the hands and fingers. The much smaller, smoother flat warts can be found on the hands and fingers also, but may even show up on the face and eyes. Warts on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts and can sometimes be over an inch around. Genital warts develop in the genital and anal area; these have become a growing problem.

Warts (papilloma viruses) replicate exclusively on the surface of bodily tissues such as skin, mucosal surfaces of the genitals and anus, mouth and airways. Genital warts are highly contagious and also 90% responsible for all cases of cervical cancers and other health problems. HPV also decreases sperm count, which is one of the causes of infertility.

Laryngeal papillomatosis also know as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a rare medical condition caused by (HPV) infection of the throat that can lead to tumors. This condition obstructs the airway and without treatment is potentially fatal.
