The best-known over-the-counter treatments typically use the active ingredient salicylic acid. Despite its effectiveness, it can make the area around the wart tender. Other home-fixes for wart removal involve raiding the pantry. For example, one common grandma-endorsed remover involves a potato. Yes, the lowly spud is reputed to have power over the wart. Simply cut a raw potato and rub the cut side against the wart several times a day for at least two weeks. Although this cure has been endorsed by generations of grandmas and nanas, there is not scientific evidence to back up the claims.
