Genital Warts Removal
Have HPV…when am i not contagious?
Yesterday I was diagnosed with HPV (human papillomavirus), the one that causes genital warts. Lucky me. I’m not a slut, or unsafe, so please keep any rude comments to yourself (for those of you who are more superior then I). I’ve scoured the internet for info, that my Dr, didn’t give me….An so I’m wondering…After the removal of said warts, am I still contagious?
Thank you, all three of you have helped me. Thank you.
Most people get HPV just about as soon as they start having sex. Having HPV makes you normal, not a slut or unsafe. By the way, condoms do not prevent you from getting HPV.
You are probably going to get a bunch of answers from people who say HPV is “forever” and you will never stop being contagious. Really? So I’m still contagious for that wart I had on my hand when I was a child? All warts are caused by HPV you know. SOME people, a small minority, remain HPV positive forever.
Within 1-2 years the virus is reduced to indectable levels in most people. The average being just 8 months (but that study had to do with cervical infections not warts). Do you still have some of the virus living in you after this period? Maybe. Are you still contagious. Maybe. The big problem with HPV is that there is really no good way to tell when you stop being contagious.

A doctor is basically decribing his belief that once you are symptom free for a few months, you should considered yourself HPV negative again. I think his reasoning is actually pretty solid: basically you have no more reason to think you are contagious than anyone else who’s ever had sex!! At some point, telling someone, “I might be able to give you HPV” is the same thing as saying “I have had sex before.”
Once you get the warts removed and a few months go by without recurrence, consider yourself cured.
