Children Warts

The age old myth that touching a toad or picking it up would give you warts is something that mothers and grandmothers still use on their children.

Is it a truth or fiction?

If it is true you would get them from frogs just as easily as you could catch it from a toad or any other type of amphibian?

Well the truth is that you will not get a wart from a toad but you are more likely to get one from your friend that just dried their hands on a bathroom towel and you decide to use it after them.

This myth came into existence when mothers wanted a way to have their children stop picking up animals outside for fear they had diseases and were dirty. The toad became the culprit because it has bumps all over its body that resemble warts and one mother thought the toad actually had this virus because it did not look like the smooth coated frog and thence was afraid for their children to acquire the ugly disfigurements on their hands from touching the animal.

The toad has protrusions on its body which are glands and this helps the amphibian live in dry climates unlike most frogs. They also blend into their environment with the different colors made possible by the wart like protrusions.

So when your mom says hey do not touch the toad because it will give you warts, just reply with Mom that is an old wives tale and is not true.

To keep from obtaining warts you should follow good hygiene practices and that includes washing hands after being in contact with someone or shaking hands. Warts can be transmitted by your skin contacting that of someone who has an infected area. This virus can also be caught by wiping your hands on a towel after someone else who has a wart on their hand. This may not show quickly and sometimes takes 3-12 months to appear, so you may not actually know where the wart came from since they take longer to submerge through the top skin layer.
